The secrets of the DR S97 chassis, by Danilo Rossi

The 5-time World Champion Danilo Rossi, founder of DR Racing, opens the doors of his factory’s headquarters in Arce (Frosinone – Italy) to unveil all details of the DR S97 chassis, OK version.
The DR is the result of the talent and passion of the five-time World Champion Danilo Rossi (1990 Formula A, 1992 Formula K, 1992 Formula C, 1997 F. Super A, 1999 F. Super A).

Within a few years it became an important part of the karting world. Like the major brands, DR also operates as both a manufacturer and racing team. With regard to its chassis, the concept, design and development are 100% “home-made”; for the production phase only the Danilo Rossi’s company relies on the professionalism of CRG, which materially produces the bodies, including the ones analysed in this article: the S97.

The chassis in question is of a traditional type with chrome molybdenum steel tubes all of which are 30 mm in diameter, 50 mm axle and 1045 mm pitch. The frontal track is 745 mm and the rear track is 10 cm less (645 mm).

All the welding of the S97 is performed with an automated numerical control system, which ensures absolute precision and demonstrates the attention of Danilo Rossi (and the products he designs) to detail.

The perfect example of this practice is the discharge holes of the welds between the body’s main pipes and auxiliary pipes (for example, for the support of the flanks) where the smaller tubes have crescent-shaped grooves to discharge welding voltages and not affect the mechanical characteristics of the main pipes.

This allows the structural qualities of the body to remain unchanged, and hence the speed and resistance of the pipes. A similar level of finishing detail is found in the connection systems of the support tubes to the body’s seat.

On the right side, the larger tube connects to the oblique tube passing under the seat with a sealing ring that optimises the resistance of the structure, while a smaller diameter tube is welded directly onto this oblique tube.

The rear axle bearings (flanges) with 3 height adjustment levels are also note-worthy: the connected holes system results…(keep reading on the “UNDER REVIEW” TKART Magazine channel)
