TRANSFORM YOUR SMARTPHONE INTO A TELEMETRY DEVICE

Max Bernardi
02 June 2017
iLAPS is a telemetry system designed for smartphones (Android and iPhone) that can record manage and share every useful bit of data during track sessions.
iLAPS is currently under test, so while we wait to test it on a kart, we analysed it “in theory” and spoke to its inventor

In karting, there is a high number of variables with which to analyse performance; they regard both the driver and the kart. For the iLaps system. Telemetry is essential in order to gain a detailed understanding of all the useful information required to improve. This is the premise of the iLaps system, which combines the importance of data collection with the convenience and versatility of smartphones. Indeed, the core of the iLaps system is the mobile phone, placed in a high-tech case that transforms it into an intelligent dashboard capable of interfacing with the information provided by telemetry sensors.
Tachometer, lap and section times, the gap between the current and best lap, calculation of the ideal fastest lap, speed, gear engaged, temperatures, pressures, trajectories... this is some of the data that you can manage using a finger via the Dashboard, thanks to the smartphone’s touchscreen.
In addition, the iLAPS software allows telemetry to be uploaded to the Cloud in real time: for professionals, it allows engineers to analyse data immediately, comparing them to those of the other drivers on the team. For amateurs, it allows them to compare times and trajectories with friends, who can also see them in real time while the drivers are still out on the track. Once the day is over, the smartphone can be removed from the Sigma dashboard to continue analysing the data at leisure and even share it by publishing the data in a dedicated and secure web space.

In order to monitor the position, the iLaps system uses a multi-satellite GPS GNSS, with an internal GPS antenna, integrated into the Sigma dashboard. This solution was adopted to have a better positioning receiver module than the smartphone’s built-in one. The latter usually has a refresh rate of 1 Hz (it receives the position once every second) and a horizontal accuracy of about 20 metres. The multi-satellite GPS integrated into the Sigma dashboard, on the other hand, operates at a frequency of 50 Hz, updating the position up to 50 times per second, with a margin of error less than 1 metre.

"It all started in 2014" - says Stefano Brozzoni, the creator of iLaps - thanks to karting. While accompanying my son Alessandro, a driver in international competitions, in the team’s tent I realised how telemetry data analysis could be improved. In particular, by combining my passion for motorsport and my role as an entrepreneur in the mobile application industry, I concentrated on the opportunity of sharing data anywhere. In order to develop this idea, I involved a group of engineers to prepare a development plan. After producing several prototypes, testing all the components and holding discussions with professionals, we created iLaps. The system is currently being tested: there are 1000 drivers around the world in all types of motorsport testing the features of our telemetry system. We are also developing peripheral sensors to complete the range of accessories and provide drivers with the best possible product. If everything goes to plan, iLaps telemetry will be ready for the public within the first three months of 2018".
