CIK-FIA EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP – KFJ- RD 3: LORENZO TRAVISANUTTO WINS
TKART Staff
26 July 2014

HOT NEWS - TKART - KRISTIANSTAD (SWEDEN) – In the third of four rounds of the KFJ title hunt victory goes to Lorenzo Travisanutto (PCR/TM), who authors an incredible race. The Italian starts from third on grid, immediately finds the right opening, and leaps into the top spot. His leadership is short-lived, however, because he runs into a dirty patch and his kart “acts up”. He swerves, then gets back in control, but he has slipped down to sixth.

Danish driver Christian Lundgaard (Tony Kart/Vortex) takes control of the race and commands until the last lap, when he folds under pressure. The one who takes over is precisely Travisanutto, on the charge with a sequence of nice passes. Eventually, the Scandinavian “surprise” gets a ten second penalty, for having cut across the track when he lost control of his vehicle in the final beats of the race. Sadly, he steps onto the podium, before discovering that commissioners have demoted him to 16th place. His mistake was probably fruit of inexperience, but, even so, he did an excellent race, considering he led the field in such a high-level international context. After Lundgaard’s penalty, second place honors go to another nice surprise of the day, Bard Verkroost (Fa Kart/TM), who started from fifteenth on grid and on his way up dueled  fiercely with Mick Junior (Tony Kart/Vortex), at times with borderline attacks. The German driver also did a nice rebound, charging past 20 rivals with incredible ease,  and has to keep an eye out for everyone when the podium is in reach. The first rival he has to keep in check is precisely Verkroost, who isn’t willing to make concessions and, after losing his position, is ready to recover it in the final beats. Mick Junior recovers third place only after commissioners  intervene and penalize Lundgaard – this is a well-deserved result that sets him among the candidates for the final battle in England at the end of August, where the KFJ European title hunt will come to a close.

Baby Race driver Leonardo Lorandi (Tony kart/Parilla) also catches a glimpse of the podium: after winning the prefinal,  he resists until lap 8, when he is running second. Then he seems to run out of energy and slides down to sixth. The names that count in the championship, instead, seem to have taken the weekend off. The only one who tries his hand at the event victory is Daniel Ticktum (Zanardi/Parilla) : he does a not so great start from second on grid and ends the race fifth. The results is worth a considerable amount in terms of points and his decision to defend it without taking great risks was on mark. Enaam Ahmed (FA Kart/Vortex) retains the championship lead, even if his Swedish performance was far from impressive: he ends 11th and  gains some points anyways. His teammate Logan Sargeant (FA Kart/Vortex) ends 13th and collects a few points towards the title hunt, enough to get past Anton Haaga (Kosmic/LKE) and claim 5th place in the championship. On his hand, the Swedish driver did it all wrong on his “home” field and was eliminated in the prefinal. Finally, this was a weekend to forget also for Devlin Defrancesco, third up in the title hunt: unlike Haaga, he manages to reach the final, but has to retire after seven laps due to a technical failure and goes home with 0 points.

There other two drivers who, one way or another, deserve honorable  mention. The first is Julius Lassen (Energy/TM), a Danish driver who races as a wild card entry: he starts thirtieth and ends eighth, scoring the best lap of the race (53.013). The other is Juan Correa (Energy/TM), who starts off the weekend in great from, taking pole on Friday and collecting some heat wins, but on Sunday fails to confirm his results: in the prefinal he is ninth and in the feature race he slides all the way to 18th.
