[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he race towards the European title has begun.
We have the first official standings of the season after the first round of the European CIK-FIA Championship, which took place last week in Sarno (Italy). The drivers of the KZ, OK and OK Junior categories scored points at the end of the qualifying heats and those points were added up to those scored at the end of the Finals. OK and OKJ are racing in five of the six rounds of the 2017 European calendar, while the KZ category has got four appointments in schedule. On the other hand, the KZ2 Championship is on three rounds and it starts from next event in Genk (B) on 14th May. In each category, according to the rules, drivers have to discard their worst score achieved both in the intermediate classification after qualifying heats and in the Finals. A detailed recap of the first event of the Championship will be aired by the channel Motorsport TV next week.

De Conto is the first leader in KZ.
His bad result in the KZ Final in Sarno made the Finnish Simo Puhakka (Kosmic-Vortex-Bridgestone) drop back in 10th place in the standings after being the top driver in the heats. Better luck for the Italian Paolo De Conto (CRG-TM, in the foto on top), the winner of the Final and the current leader of the category. The reigning World Champion leads with 33 points ahead of the Czech Patrik Hajek (Kosmic-Vortex), who scored 25 points in Sarno after he gained the second place in the Final. Third place with 20 points for the Dutch Stan Pex (CRG-TM), who is ahead of Bas Lammers (Sodi-TM) thanks to a better result in the heats. Lammers (3rd in the Final) is fourth with 17 points, ahead of the

French Jeremy Iglesias (Formula K-TM), 15 points. In the photo above, the podium of KZ.

Pourchaire leads in OK.
He finished in first position in the heats and won the Final: the French Theo Pourchaire (Kosmic-Vortex-LeCont, in the photo above) now leads with flying colours the OK standings thanks to his 35 points. Behind him, with 29 points and runner-up in the Final, there is the English Clement Novalak, while the Spanish David Vidales (both on Tony Kart-Vortex), third in the Final and in the standings, follows with 22 points. He lost a position during the last laps of the Final and this cost him the third place in the overall standings: the Polish Karol Basz (Kosmic-Vortex) is fourth with 21 points, also thanks to his brilliant performance in the heats. Behind him the Russian Pavel Bulantsev (Tony Kart-Vortex, 16 points).

Edgar gains the top of the standings in OKJ.
Thanks to his victory in the Final, the English Jonny Edgar (Exprit-TM-Vega, in the photo above) leads the OKJ standings with 34 points. He managed to keep at bay the Brazilian Gabriel Bortoleto (CRG-Parilla, 30 points), who was the best in the qualifying heats. There is a narrow gap between the two drivers, but also the English Harry Thompson (FA Kart-Vortex) follows closely with his 20 points. The 3rd place scored in the Final was what O’neill Muth (Zanardi-Parilla) needed to haul himself to the 5th position of the standings, right behind the English Zak O’Sullivan (FA Kart-Vortex). A good result which allowed the German to redeem himself after his poor performance in the heats.
