FIA Karting World Championship OK and OKJ, Portimao: Qualifying - Pole position for Morgatto (OK) and Badoer (OKJ)
Max Bernardi
06 November 2020

The OK / OKJ 2020 World Championship began under pouring rain that continued for the whole Friday. Both categories completed their qualifications on a wet track, with rain tires. Although the rain stopped in the last qualifying practice series, the track did not seem to improve as the rounds went by, actually quite the contrary.

OK: For the Brazilian Morgatto is a “World” pole

Tires: Le Cont

  • Matheus Morgatto (Birel ART Racing - Birel ART - TM Racing) is the poleman of the OK category at the Portimao 2020 world championship. The Brazilian takes to the track with the first group and sets the time of 1: 11.444 which earned him pole.

  • The other poleman of the respective groups are, in this order, Andrea Kimi Antonelli (KR Motorsport - KR - IAME), second overall and group 2 leader, Callum Bradshaw (Tony Kart Racing Team - Tony Kart - Vortex), third overall and first in the group 3, and Pedro Hiltbrand (Tony Kart Racing Team - Tony Kart - Vortex), fourth overall and poleman of group 4.

  • In the overall ranking there are two outsiders, Morgan Peter (Argenti Motorsport - KR - IAME) and Alexander Hartvig (Koski Motorsport - Tony Kart - TM Racing), respectively 5th and 6th.

  • In seventh position we have a re-found World Champion, Lorenzo Travisanutto (Parolin Racing Kart - Parolin - TM Racing) followed by Taylor Barnard (Rosberg Racing Academy - KR - IAME)

  • The top 10 is closed by Luigi Coluccio (Kosmic Kart Racing Department - Kosmic -Vortex), 9th, and Laurens Van Hoepen (Leclerc By Lennox Racing - Birel ART - TM Racing), 10th.

  • Eleventh overall position for the 2017 world champion, Danny Keirle (CV Performance Group - KR - IAME): the Englishman has been missing from the international racing stage for some time and returns with a good result.

  • Behind him, 12th, is a brilliant Lorenzo Patrese (KR Motorsport-IAME) who confirms his growth in this season.

  • Less well than usual, also due to the uneven track conditions, some drivers we are used to seeing in the sharp end of the rankings. We are talking about Nikita Bedrin (Ward racing - Tony Kart - Vortex), 23rd overall, James Wharton (Parolin Racing kart - Parolin - TM Racing), 25th, Joseph Turney (Tony Kart Racing Team - Tony Kart - Vortex), 30th , Rafael Camara (Forza Racing - Exprit - TM Racing), 32nd, Oliver Gray (Leclerc By Lennox Racing - Birel ART - TM Racing), 41st, and Jamie Day (Leclerc By Lennox Racing - Birel ART - TM Racing), 43rd.

OKJ: The fastest is Badoer, as usual

Tires: MG

  • Brando Badoer (KR Motorsport - KR - IAME) once again proves to be difficult to beat in the flying lap. The Italian, despite a track that is visibly getting worse with each session, takes part in qualifying in the last group and scores the overall pole position in the category with a time of 1:12.509.

  • Second place overall for Evan Giltaire (Sodikart - Sodi - TM Racing), followed by Tymoteusz Kucharczyk (Birel ART Racing - RK - TM Racing) and Ean Eyckmans (Kosmic Racing Department - Kosmic - Vortex).

  • From 5th to 10th place we find Christian Ho (Sauber Karting Team - KR - IAME), Dion Gowda (Ricky Flynn Motorsport - Kosmic kart - Vortex), Alex Powell (KR Motorsport - KR - IAME), Nikola Tsolov (DPK Racing - KR - IAME), Maceo Capietto (Kosmic Racing Department - Kosmic - Vortex) and Maxens Verbrugge (VDK Racing - KR - IAME).

  • Less brilliant than usual, considering that he also took part in qualifying in the first group, Ugo Ugochukwu (Sauber Karting Team - KR - IAME). The reigning European champion is still in the top end of the standings, perfectly in the running for the final victory.

  • Arvid Lindblad (KR Motorsport - KR - IAME) seems to be more off the pace. The Englishman, who stood up to Ugochukwu in the fight for the European title, finishing second, is only 33rd.
