VAN DER BURGT WINS THE KZ2 SUPER CUP

11 October 2014

HOT NEWS - TKART - SARNO (ITALY) Let’s start from an incredible observation. Altogether, between heats, two prefinals and the final, the International KZ2 Super Cup had us watching the track 18 times. And 18 “races” mean 18 best laps. Well the incredible thing is that each one of these best laps had a different name! This is a sign of the great balance that characterized the KZ2 field and confirms that the one who won is the one who best managed his strengths and energies, saving them all for the main day of action on Sunday. His name is Ryan Van Der Burgt (DR/TM), who had already shown great speed across the heats, where only a technical glitch was able to slow him down.

In the prefinals Der Burgt achieved a great climb that handed him a front row start for the final. Here he managed a winning dash off grid and snatched the lead from pole-sitter Menno Paauwe (Birel/TM). Behind him the action was so intense that several drivers “dropped” out, including top names like Andrea Dalè (CRG/Maxter), Jan Midrla (Birel/TM) and Marco Zanchetta (Maranello/TM), all out by the first corner. Fabian Federer (CRG/Maxter), instead, manages to stay on track, but also “pays” for a tough start: he remains midfield all race, failing to dash uphill.
Up front, Lorenzo Camplese (Maranello/TM) quickly caught up to Der Burgt and went on to narrow the gap hundredths at a time. In the stands everyone was sure it wouldn’t be long until he’d pounce ahead and grab the lead. Instead, all bets lost, because the Dutch leader not only went on to race like a speed devil, but also kept focused on his race and paid no attention to what was going on behind him. The podium was rounded off by a solitary Paauw, too far behind the top two and too far ahead of the rest of the pack.  Hard-cgahrer Luca Tilloca (Intrepid/Modena Engines) managed to top the pack of followers, rebounding to fourth place and closing ahead of fellow Italian Francesco Celenta (Energy/TM), also author of a great climb (13 positions) and author of the best lap.
Top qualifier Jorge Carlos Pescador (Praga/Parilla), instead, fell back as early as the prefinal, probably folding under a degree of pressure he is not used to handling. In the final he starts off ultra-fast and holds fourth place for a while, then when the race changed pace he slid back and in the end he had to make do with 7th place.
A final note goes to the best climb and the worst fall out of the competitors who made it to the checkered flag. The first goes to Thomas Laurent (Tony Kart/Vortex), who rises up 15 spots to close 14th, the other “record” goes to USA driver Joey Wimsett (CRG/Maxter) who ends 23rd, after slipping back 9 positions. His only consolation is that he was the best American in the race.
