WSK SUPER MASTER SERIES: SATURDAY REVIEW
TKART Staff
11 April 2014

HOT NEWS - TKART -- WSK SUPER MASTER SERIES - It feels like we're back in 2013 when Lando Norris (Fa Kart/Vortex) and Alessio Lorandi (Tony Kart/TM) were beating each other up (metaphorically speaking) in KFJ. Instead, it's a new season and a new class, but the competitive rivalry is still there.

The Ricky Flynn English boy is back. After giving the impression of inadequacy in first races in KF this season, on this Heats Saturday, at the 2nd round of the WSK Super Master Series, Lando Norris proved that... he's with it! Indeed. Yesterday he conquered pole position, as we wrote, today he does evenb better and wins 3 heats.
Moving on to Alessio Lorandi. The Baby Race driver "only" claims two 1st places and three best laps. Are they the world's best couple (of rivals)? We don't know yeat, but what we do know is that tomorrow they will start their respective prefinals in top spot. Up front on grid for pre-final A there will also be Niko Kari (Tony Kart/Vortex): yesterday we had defined him a surprise, today he still is and gives sign he migfht become a pleasant certainty. Yet another class rookie who is not afraid to rise to the challenge is Martijn Van Leeuwen (Zanardi/Parilla): outside spot of row 1 for pre-final B. Following we have a trio that tomorrow will try to improve anyway possible, since it includes 3 names with a propensity for stepping on the podium: Karol Basz (Tony Kart/Vortex), Nikita Mazepin (Tony Kart/Vortex) and Jehan Daruvala (Fa Kart/Vortex), respecytively 5th, 6th, and 7th  in the general ranks for Sunday. Instead, Nicklas Nielsen (Kosmic/vortex) is lower in the charts than where we're used to seeing him: 12th. Why? Not so brilliant qualifyings placed him at mid-groid for the start of the finals and precisely from the qualifyings on the Kosmic team has noted a general rise in track times that they still cannot explain. They are hard at work, we'll have to wait and see. World Champion Tom Joyner (Zanardi/Parilla) seems to be on the same stream and places 10th overall (twice 7th and once 3rd in the heats). Instead, Sidney Gomez (CRG/TM) takes a definite step back after surprising everyone yesterday in the qualifyings: today, due also to an unfinished race, he closes the day in P27. A note also goes to Callum Illot (Zanardi/Parilla), 2nd in one heat, but rather unlucky in the other two races, where a technical glitch forced him to withdraw, relegating him to 16th place on grid for the start of his pre-final. Bad day for Gabriel Aubry (Tony Kart/Vortex) as well: the Frenchman was fast, very fast, but his best placement is only 16th, due to constant breakdowns; in the general charts he is down to 42nd. Egor Stupenkov (Energy/TM), instead, is author of a great rebound! The Russian had been unable to complete even 1 lap in yesterday's qualifyings and, even though he started from the very rear in each heat, he placed 12th, 7th and 11th. Considering that recovering is never easy and that in Castelletto the first corner often spells out a crash fro those who start from behind...well, the Energy driver proved he is in great shape.

Alright, we've already said this and we may sound repetitive, but it's not our fault if the level of this season's KZ2 is truly high and it takes nothing to change the values on track. This time the final standings were shuffled by a penalty in the last heat. In the last race of the day Bas Lammers (FK/Parilla) was victim of an overtake by Marco Ardigò (Tony Kart/Vortex) and replied immediately sending his rival from top spot to 8th. Despite his one-eighty, the Italian starts anew and charges up to 5th. His Dutch rival wins at the flag, but not according to the judges who deem his moves irregular and give him a 5 second penalty, sending him down to 9th. The first place is inherited by Arnaud Kozlinski (Intrepid/TM), already winner of another heat: his results land him on the top spot of the general charts and in pole for the start of pre-final A tomorrow. Ardigò got his due, anyway,s conquering the top spot for the start of pre-final B, thanks two his double-win in the other two heats. Back to Formula K's diver: Lammers ends the day 8th overall in the general ranks. Best qualifier Rick Dreezen (Zanardi/Parilla) does a great performance, with 1 victory and a 2nd place, and places 3rd best overall.   Following in 4th and 5th we have "usual suspects" Flavio Camponeschi (Tony Kart/Vortex) and Jonathan Thonon (Praga/Parilla), the latter setting an unusual record: he doesn't win any of the heats, but drives the best lap in all three, meaning he is the fastest anytime he steps on track - a sign that bids he will be a top player on Finals Sunday. A note of mention definitely goes to the other "Praga man", Czech driver Patrik Hajek for an incredible rebound: 18th in the qualifyings, tonight he is 6th best overall. Among the "big names" Paolo De Conto (Birel/TM) is a bit delayed: 12th, for a withdrawal due to engine issues in one heat, although he gave signs to have found his usual pace considering his victory in his last heat today. A pounce back in the charts for Andre Dalè (CRG/Maxter), who wastes his 6th best overall placement in the qualifyings by concluding the day of heats in P18. The Italian, a mega private entry (and mega fast) has a hard time at the start of his races due to engine fialure precisely when the lights went off! A weekend to completely forget so far, instead, for two drivers who are usually on the top end of the standings: Ben Hanley (ART GP/TM) and Riccardo Negro (Top Kart/Parilla): both unable to produce a good performance and also victims of bad luck, the two close 21st and 24th. Tomorrow won't be easy for them.
