[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he CIK-FIA European Championship meets in Le Mans the history of Motorsport.
Qualifying and first heats at Le Mans: the fourth round of the 2017 CIK-FIA European Championship has begun. The venue of the event is the kart circuit set within the magnificent track which, only two weeks ago, hosted the famous 24 Hours. This weekend, European kart racing is in a place dedicated to motorsport laden with history; the drivers who have undergone scrutineering are 245, divided into the categories OK and OK Junior (at the third out of five rounds of the Championship) and KZ2 (at its second round out of three of the season). Also the CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy is part of the event: the trophy is at the second round out of three. It is a crucial moment for all the categories now that the season is halfway through. Tomorrow will be dedicated to the heats, just before the grand finale on Sunday.

Championship, set the best time in qualifying on wet track with 1’04”066, 1”398 faster than the Finnish Elias Seppanen (Tony Kart-Vortex). Third place for the English Jonny Edgar (Exprit-TM), the most dangerous opponent of the current championship leader Harry Thompson (FA Kart-Vortex), who set the seventh time. First successes in the heats for the Australian Jack Doohan and the English Zak O’Sullivan (both on FA-Vortex).
In KZ2, the fastest was the Italian Alessandro Pelizzari (CKR-TM-Bridgestone), who stopped the clock at 54”281. The French Paul Fontaine (Sodi-TM) is 3”756 behind and, just like Pelizzari, he hasn’t scored any points so far. Third time for the Italian Francesco Celenta (Praga-TM), 15th in the standings. 7th place for the current leader, the Italian Matteo Viganò (Tony Kart-Vortex).
The Norwegian Dennis Hauger (CRG-Parilla-LeCont) set the best time in OK with 53”155; his time was 186 milliseconds better than the one set by the French Theo Pourchaire (Kosmic-Vortex), 3rd in the championship. Hauger is trying to gain positions in the championship standings, where he is currently in 21st position. The same can be said for the Brazilian Gianluca De Castro, third today. Troubled weekend for the OK leader, the Spanish David Vidales, currently in the last positions of the time ranking.
In the Academy Trophy the pole-sitter is the English Alexander Simmonds, ahead of the Dutch Tijmen van der Helm and the Spanish Ruben Moya. The leader, Mike van Vugt, is 13th (all drivers on Exprit-Vortex-Bridgestone).
