[dropcap]K[/dropcap]ristianstad kicks off the World Karting Championship.
The history of Swedish karting is going to become richer next weekend, thanks to the World Championship event which is going to be hosted by the facility set in Kristianstad. The Asum Ring Circuit will be the venue of the World CIK-FIA Championship of the KZ category, together with the International KZ2 Supercup and the third and final round of the CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy. Sweden has played a key role in the history of motorsport; the country has given to international karting men and organisations of great value, beginning with Ronnie Peterson, third in the 1966 World Karting Championship before to become top driver in the F1 Lotus team. The tracks of Kalmar (1972 and 1982) and Axamo (1984), in the Smaland County, was the Swedish facilities to host the CIK-FIA World Championship before the Asum Ring. This year the world KZ title will be awarded in the Scania County, along the Baltic Sea coastline. The event organisers of the Kristianstad Karting Klubb have decided to dedicate a special moment to the history of karting: in fact, there will be during the weekend a parade of historic vehicles, that will participate to demonstrative sessions on track until the end of the event.

The show begins with qualifying.
In KZ, the Italian Paolo De Conto (in the photo on top - #4 CRG-TM-Vega) fought hard against Jorrit Pex (CRG-Vortex) and, finally, he was 38 milliseconds ahead thanks to his fastest lap in 49”069. Behind the two frontrunners the time of 49”201 was incredibly set by both the Dutch Bas Lammers (Sodi-TM) and the Italian Lorenzo Camplese (Parolin-TM). It was a challenging first day for former F.1 driver Rubens Barrichello (BirelArt-Parilla), who experienced how tough this category can be and did not manage to remain close to the top drivers. In KZ2, the Spanish Pedro Hiltbrand (above, #137 CRG-Maxter-Vega) grabbed the pole setting the best time at 49”101, 120 milliseconds better than the Italian Felice Tiene (CRG-TM). Third and fourth time for the two Italian drivers Matteo Viganò (TopKart-Parilla) and Luca Corberi, both of them at less than two tenths of a second behind the pole-sitter. In the Academy Trophy best time for the Swedish Alfred Nilsson (below, #514), currently in fifth position in the general standings. Second place for the Belgian Elie Goldstein, a promising outsider who is currently in 17th position. Some troubles for the current leader, the British Callum Bradshaw, who managed to place only in 16th position (all the drivers on Exprit-Vortex-Vega).
