5 ESSENTIAL PRODUCTS/ACCESSORIES FOR OVERHAULING THE KART FUEL PUMP
In karts using float-type carburettors (for further details, see “Tech Talk | The float carburettor ”), the vacuum fuel pump is the component that transfers, via the hoses, the fuel mixture from the tank to the carburettor by exploiting the pressure and vacuum variations generated by the engine. Its operation is based on internal diaphragms and valves that move continuously to ensure correct fuel flow; over time, however, these components are subject to wear and may lose efficiency. For this reason, fuel pump overhaul is among the maintenance operations that should be scheduled at least once a year, for example during the winter break or when putting a kart back on track after a long period of inactivity (on this topic, see also “How To | Getting your kart back in good working condition after a long break”). When the fuel pump does not function correctly, fuel delivery becomes irregular: the mixture may reach the carburettor late or in insufficient quantity, making starting difficult and causing fuel “flat spots” during acceleration. On track, these issues affect engine running consistency and, during higher load phases, increase the risk of seizure. The complete procedure for removing, overhauling and refitting the fuel pump is described in our “Doctor TKART | Overhauling the petrol pump”. Here, instead, the focus is on the accessories and tools that are essential to carry out the operation correctly: a selection of five products, of which the first four are directly related to fuel pump overhaul, while the last represents an additional recommendation aimed at keeping the entire kart fuel system efficient over time and concerns the replacement of…
