Maintenance of the sequential transmission of shifter karts is a fundamentally important aspect to maximise the life and optimise the performance of your Shifter engine. In the article “How To | Mounting the KZ engine transmission” we created a comprehensive tutorial explaining how to mount it correctly. In this "Must have" article, on the other hand, we highlight which products and accessories you absolutely must have in order to maintain this component as effectively as possible (like true karting professionals). All for less than 100 euros.

TB1215 SILICONE SEALANT

TB 1215 Silicone Sealant is a silicone based adhesive and sealant product which can be used for a variety of applications. With regard to maintaining the transmission of a Shifter engine, it is used by many tuners and mechanics to seal the transmission unit crankcase during engine assembly. In fact, this product offers high resistance to high temperatures, oils and hydrocarbons, bad weather and ageing. It can usually be bought in either cartridges, from which it is applied using a common silicone caulking gun, or tubes (like the one we describe). In both cases, the product maintains a uniform mixing of its internal components over time. How is it used? In order to ensure proper adhesion, the surfaces to which it is applied must be clean, dry and free from dirt, grease or other substances. It is therefore necessary to clean the surfaces in advance using an appropriate detergent that evaporates quickly without leaving any residue (such as the one shown in the following slides). Furthermore, it is worth making sure that the correct dose of sealant is used to prevent any excess finding its way inside the crankcase. Also, using the right quantity of product makes it much easier to clean up any excess once the two semi-crankcases are fitted together. To ensure the correct dose, we recommend cutting the tip of the new sealant nozzle to get the right flow diameter. If a mistake is made during its use, this sealant can be removed using a solvent before it becomes completely dry. On the other hand, if it’s already dry, a spatula or a brush can be used which does not damage the material and the surface finish of the engine crankcase.
