Now it’s official: the FIA world championship for the OK and OKJ categories will not be held in Brazil, but in Europe. For several months already, the concerns of teams, drivers and professionals with regards to holding a world championship in Brazil in the current pandemic situation have been the center of attention. In June, we, TKART, had talked about it with FIA Karting President Felipe Massa, while in August we had retraced all the phases of the “arm wrestling game” between FIA and Manufacturers/Teams, providing the latest updates. Today, however, we finally arrive at a conclusion. In an official statement, FIA announced the following news:
The 2021 FIA Karting World Championship, featuring OK and OK Junior categories, scheduled for Birigui, Brazil, on December 2-5, has been cancelled as the global COVID-19 pandemic continues to generate challenges for teams, drivers and organisers in many regions.
The 2021 FIA Karting OK-OKJ World Championship will take place in Spain from 29th to 31st October. The venue will be announced in the coming days.
Felipe Massa, President of the FIA International Karting Commission said: “It is with great sadness that we find ourselves having to cancel the World Championship Event in Birigui. The global situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic makes the event impossible to happen where we wanted to go. I would like to personally thank the local organizer Speed Park and the CBA staff for their commitment and hard work to date and we look forward to working together with them to develop FIA Karting in Brazil.
A new event will take place in Europe to allow the best Karting drivers in the world to finish their season with a World Championship.”
