On the eve of the event promoted by the Italian tyre manufacturer, TKART reveals everything there is to know in order to participate in the competition, to get to know it and to follow it.
The second edition of the LeCont Trophy will take place on the first weekend of December at the Lucas Guerrero International Circuit, located in Chiva in the Valencian Community. There are six categories admitted: X30 MINI, X30 Junior, X30 Senior, OK-Junior, OK and KZ2. As explained by the Marketing Manager of LeCont, Paolo Bombara, the roots of the race promoted by the Italian tyre manufacturer lie in the idea of their Spanish importer: the Rodakart company and precisely its owner Hakim Ordonez. It is precisely Ordonez, in collaboration with the FACV (the Federation of the Valencian Community) and its President Nacho Aviño, who take care of the organisation of the event.
The competition, which takes place in a single round, was born with the spirit of a party dedicated to the conclusion of the karting season in Spain. Furthermore, the LeCont branded race aims to promote the products of the Italian manufacturer, already a protagonist in the Spanish scene as a supplier of various regional championships. Compared to the first edition (which dates back to December 2020), the second edition of the LeCont Trophy is embellished with a further opportunity for its drivers: in fact, the participants will be able to familiarise themselves with a track that next year will host the first round of the FIA Karting European Championship OK-OKJ, set for the weekend of March 23-26, 2023. As a result, the potential catchment area of an event that still wants to maintain its celebratory spirit is expanding, so much so that some international teams, including the Swedish Ward Racing, have already confirmed their presence. The choice of the organisers to include, in addition to the traditional Spanish categories powered by IAME, the international OK and OKJ classes derives precisely from the commitment of the circuit in the European championship.
However, the limit of 34 drivers admitted to each category remains unchanged. The Chiva track was selected for its strategic and favorable position from a climatic point of view, considering that, even in late autumn, the region of the Valencian Community can often offer days of good weather with mild temperatures. However, the hours of light during the day remain limited and a maximum number of drivers has been established for reasons of available time. In any case, LeCont ensures the drawing up of a waiting list and the utmost willingness to welcome as many participants as possible. The 2nd LeCont Trophy is open to all licenced drivers and it is already possible to register online, with the premise that the order of entries will be drawn up by virtue of the order of registrations.
With the intention of creating an accessible race, the official activities of the competition will begin on Friday, December 2, with free practice, continue on Saturday with qualifying and a heat reserved for each category, and then conclude on Sunday with the prefinals and finals. However, the circuit will remain open in the previous week to allow the classic individual tests to be carried out for drivers who wish to train. In line with the aim of containing costs, the X30 MINI class will be equipped with the LH05 tyres, already used in the category of the youngest drivers during the regional championships supplied by LeCont and therefore easily available for the teams. X30 Junior and OK Junior will also use the usual LO branded tyres, the Option model of the Italian manufacturer in a non-CIK FIA approved version, widely used and appreciated in Spain. The range of products in action at Chiva will be completed by the SVC Prime, CIK FIA homologated, which will take to the track with the competitors of X30 Senior, OK and KZ2.
Finally, the second edition of the LeCont Trophy will boast the novelty of superpole, a further qualifying session for the fastest drivers in OK and KZ2. At the end of the traditional timed practice, the top five finishers will compete in an additional challenge, valid for establishing their definitive starting positions. LeCont will give a set of special tyres to all these protagonists, who will thus live an unprecedented experience, taking advantage of tyres that have not yet been marketed and are specially built by the Italian company to ensure high performance over a flying lap. Participants who gain access to the superpole will be stopped directly on the track at the end of qualifying and will have the right to mount the set of special tyres offered by LeCont, refuel and lubricate the chain, and then restart immediately. Another pleasant surprise will come from the prizes up for grabs, which will stand out with a series of cups with a sophisticated design. Furthermore, a historic trophy of considerable size will be presented again: the LeCont Trophy that will not be delivered, but will allow the winners to add their own plaques to it, emulating the style of the MotoGP world championship.
The Lucas Guerrero International Circuit is therefore ready to welcome the 2nd LeCont Trophy on the 1428 meters of its technical and fast track. It will be possible to enjoy the event through live timing and, on Saturday and Sunday, even through live streaming. LeCont will enthusiastically face the second round of a race that the Italian manufacturer wants to continue to offer over time, developing the format of its competition to the point of making it a cornerstone in the Spanish karting season, and then eventually exporting it to other countries as well.
