We asked Polish driver Karol Basz, official 2016 Kosmic driver and 2015 KF World Champion, how to negotiate the Lonato circuit, one of the most famous in the world and featuring a recently renewed layout, in an OK-engined kart.
1. From the straight to the first fast bend
Approach the right-hand bend after the start-finish straight at high speed, taking care not to let the rear end slide too much in order to avoid losing speed.
Take a wide trajectory so that you enter the bend properly, brush the curb on the left and the next two on the right, keeping a narrow trajectory to avoid going outside the racing line.
That’s the only way to take the bend at full speed.
2. Bend 2 to the right
The approach to Bend 2 to the right is very fast.
Braking is important, but not 100%, I’d say about 80%. The braking point is critical.
Accelerate again before mid-bend (point A) and keep close to the inside curb (point B) even when exiting the bend in order to avoid going to wide and over the left-side curb, since there isn’t much space.
3. Hairpin in front of the paddock
When you approach the hairpin, brake at 90% to 100% (point C), then take your foot slightly off the brake pedal, reducing it to between 60% and 80% (D).
