[dropcap]R[/dropcap]enowned single-seater team Carlin will join the BRDC Formula 4 grid in 2016, after the Surrey-based outfit purchased three new-for-2016 Tatuus-Cosworth BRDC F4 cars.
Carlin are one of the largest teams outside Formula 1 with race winning experience in a variety of championships including British F3, Porsche Supercup, Formula Renault 3.5, A1GP, FIA Formula 3 European Championship, GP3 Series and GP2 Series.
The outfit is based in a bespoke facility in Farnham, Surrey and began competing in the American Indy Lights Series in 2015, winning three races. A number of household names have raced for Carlin, including Formula One graduates Nico Rosberg, Daniel Ricciardo and four-time World Champion, Sebastian Vettel.
Trevor Carlin, Team Principal of Carlin, said: “We know it’s important to go where the drivers want to race, and the new 2016 MSV F4 car has created real interest amongst young drivers. We know how important it is for young drivers to prepare for the incredibly competitive FIA F3 European Championship and GP3 Series and we believe that the BRDC Formula 4 Championship is a very useful step in that process. championship will equip drivers well for the future. We will be working hard to make sure we arrive to our first race as well prepared as possible and look forward to announcing our drivers soon.”
Jonathan Palmer, Chief Executive of series organiser MotorSport Vision, commented: “I am delighted that Carlin have chosen to enter the BRDC Formula 4 Championship. Carlin are renowned as one of the most successful single-seater teams in world motorsport, competing throughout the levels including of GP2. Trevor Carlin is enormously experienced and a very shrewd judge of the potential of motorsport categories, and clearly recognises that the new Tatuus-Cosworth car will provide a perfect stepping stone for drivers from Carlin’s MSA Formula team to prepare them for their FIA F3 team, at an affordable budget.”
The 230bhp spec car features a substantial number of enhancements, including a more advanced aerodynamic package in addition to a more powerful engine, lifting its performance above current FIA F4 and MSA Formula cars, to make BRDC F4 a logical feeder category to F3 and GP3. The car will make its race debut at the opening round of the 2015 Autumn Trophy at Snetterton on November 7/8.
