After analysing the characteristics of the exhausts for the KZ classes and their effects on the performance of karts when the parameters are varied (on all of them, length and diameter), with Eligio Torreggiani, owner of the leading company in the Elto Racing sector, we now focus on the 60 Mini. In fact, even in the class dedicated to younger drivers, the exhaust can have a decisive role on the performance of the kart. The same is applicable to the exhaust with a hose used for some single-speed engines
The exhaust plays an important role in the 60 Mini as well: lengthening or decreasing its length changes the behaviour of the engine. As for the KZ, the exhaust must be approved in this class as well, but the allowed tolerances can also be varied. The difference is that, in this case, the exhaust is the same for all 60 cc engines.
The Mini exhaust has a curve, cone and final cylinder; the first curve has a tolerance of 3 mm, while the cone has a 1 mm curve. A "short" exhaust, that is at the limit of the minimum size, will improve engine acceleration, and vice versa, one at the maximum limit will optimise performance at low revs.
It is difficult to give a value; it depends on many factors, on all the characteristics of the track. Without doubt we can say that being able to improve the performance of the engine, depending on the chassis setup and driving style, can also make between a tenth and one-tenth and a half per lap. These are important values, if we consider the little differences in lap time in this class.
For those taking part in high level competitions, my advice is to replace the exhaust about every ten races. I would avoid opening it and cleaning it with acid or aggressive substances. Even burning it is not something that improves the situation, in fact: it negatively modify the resonance of the metal sheet it is composed of. Finally, replacement is the best solution to keep good engine performance.
