The airbox is a key performance element of competitive 2-stroke engines like those used in kart racing. The component has three main functions: convey fresh air to the carburetor to increase its intake, decrease noise emissions, and protect the engine and the carburetor from dirt and debris. In other words, this apparently simple component actually has a tough “mission”, considering that its three “duties” are in contrast: the more filtering material you have, the less air intake to the engine’s combustion chamber and so the more limited of a performance.
KG RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
Behind the engineering of an airbox there are complex studies on air flows and pressure waves (the factors that condition air intake), noise emission and filters. KG made significant research and development investments for the new 2016 – 2021 homologation session to come up with a truly innovative product. The result is called Nitro 23 for the new OK and OK-Junior classes and Nitro 30 for the shifter KZ. Both rely on 8 new plastic stamps, including that of the installation cradle (which is sold separately).
