The market for kart steering wheels is very homogeneous and there are not many characteristics to analyse, but it is good to know them all to be sure of always making the right choice when buying a kart or even just a new steering wheel. This is why we formulated 6 questions that delve deeply into every aspect to focus on when choosing a steering wheel and we posed them to Davide Gaggianesi, member of the research and development department of KG Karting, a leading company in the manufacturing of these components. Here are the questions we asked him that you have to test yourself with:
1. THE LAYOUT OF THE TRACK ON WHICH YOU DRIVE AFFECTS THE CHOICE OF STEERING WHEEL
2. THE NUMBER OF SPOKES HAS NO EFFECT ON THE DRIVING FEELING
3. THE SHAPE OF THE SPOKES IS AN ELEMENT TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A STEERING WHEEL
4. A SUEDE STEERING WHEEL COVER IS BETTER THAN A COVER MADE OF SYNTHETIC MATERIALS BECAUSE IT ENSURES GREATER GRIP
5. IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO CHOOSE WHEELS WITH A CROWN “STYLE” THAN PERFECTLY ROUND ONES
6. WHEN CHOOSING A STEERING WHEEL MAKE SURE IT IS AS LIGHT POSSIBLE, SO AS TO NOT NEGATIVELY AFFECT THE KART’S WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION

Well done!
Wrong!
Starting from the fact that in my career I have never seen a driver change steering wheel depending on the layout of a track, it can be said that, on a purely theoretical level, on a track full of twists and turns it is preferable to have a larger steering wheel, giveing the pilot more leverage, decreasing the effort he/she has to make. On the contrary, on faster and smoother tracks, the use of a smaller diameter steering wheel would be equally effective because the fatigue on the arms is in any case lower (a different argument applies to the fatigue of the kart driver in general, given that fast bends lead to greater lateral accelerations and greater difficulty, for example, for the neck). However, the factors that affect the choice of one steering wheel over another (as anticipated in the article "True or false | 6 quizzes on kart steering wheels, the basic concepts you absolutely need to know", editor's note) are the comfort and grip they give, the aesthetics and the diameter. Therefore, the type of track is not one of the elements taken into consideration.
