FIA Karting European Championship OK and OKJ, rd 2, Sarno: heats – Barnard (OK) and Ugochukwu (OKJ) are the leaders
Max Bernardi
22 August 2020

It was a day entirely dedicated to the Qualifying Heats, the one that has come to an end on the Circuito Internazionale di Napoli. The races were once again affected by high temperatures, but also by maneuvers often at the limit on the track, with a good deal of errors on the part of several drivers and various contacts on the track. Only tomorrow, after the last 3 heats scheduled for OKJ and the two remaining in OK, will we know the starting grids of the finals.

OK: Barnard retains the lead with one heat still to go before the final

  • Taylor Barnard (Rosberg Racing Academy - KR - IAME), first in qualifying, is still at the top of the standings after three heats out of three won and one heats still to run on Sunday morning. And now the opportunity presented to him is unique because Andrea Kimi Antonelli (KR Motorsport - KR - IAME), his main opponent, was involved in a collision with Joseph Turney (Tony Kart Racing Team - Tony Kart - Vortex) in the first heat today, following which the Italian was forced to park the kart on the track. Antonelli currently sits 13th position.

  • It is Nikita Bedrin (Ward Racing - Tony Kart - Vortex), therefore, to chase the Englishman. The Russian, in second position, has 5 penalty points as a result of a victory, a second and a third place.

  • Juho Valtanen (KR Motorsport - KR - IAME), third, does not even win a heat, but on the other hand is twice second and one time third. Results that allow him to put himself ahead of Oliver Gray (Leclerc By Lennox Racing - Birel ART - TM Racing), despite the Englishman also claiming a victory. Rafael Chaves Camara (Forza Racing - Exprit - TM Racing), also with a victory, climbs 13 positions to 5th place.

  • Joseph Turney ended the day in sixth position, but also with one more heats raced than those ahead of him. The Englishman counts among his results a victory and a second place, in addition to the seventh scored after the contact with Antonelli. Luigi Coluccio (Kosmic Kart Racing Department - Kosmic Kart - Vortex), also with four heats already raced, is seventh with only one penalty point more than Turney.

  • Eighth place, however, for Dilano Vant’Hoff (Forza Racing - Exprit - TM Racing) who recovers 5 positions. Matheus Morgatto (Birel ART Racing - BIrel ART - TM Racing) stops in ninth place, but moves up 12 positions from the qualification. Nicolò Cuman (BM Karting Team - Parolin - IAME) manages to remain in the top ten at the end of the day: a noticeable performance if you think that he is a driver who races with a totally private team.

  • Michael Paparo (Praga Racing Team - Prague - TM Racing), in eleventh position, precedes Andrea Kimi Antonelli and Norton Andreasson (Ward Racing - Tony Kart - Vortex).

  • Alex Dunne (Birel ART Racing - BIrel ART - TM Racing), sixth yesterday, slips to 15th position behind Thomas Ten Brinke (Ricky Flynn Motorsport - Kosmic Kart - Vortex) while James Wharton (Parolin Racing Kart - Parolin - TM Racing) ends the day in 17th place. The Australian also had to retire in one heat after a contact with Camara. Maya Weug (Birel ART Racing - BIrel ART - TM Racing) collects two retirements and from seventh, yesterday, today ranks 26th.

OKJ: perfect day for Ugo Ugochukwu

Tires: LeCont

  • Ugo Ugochukwu (Sauber Karting Team - KR - IAME) ousted the English Maxwell Dodds (Parolin Racing kart - Parolin - TM Racing) from the lead in the provisional ranking. The American makes no mistakes, unlike many of his colleagues who cannot say the same, and gets all 4 victories up for grabs today, while the Englishman, after yesterday's pole position, takes "only" two first places with also a second and a third position.

  • On the other hand, Freddie Slater (Ricky Flynn Motorsport - Kosmic kart - Vortex) climbs to third position, with 15 positions recovered compared to qualifying, after obtaining one win and two second places starting from the second row.  15 positions recovered in the ranking also for an always very fast Arvid Lindblad (KR Motorsport - KR - IAME), fourth behind Slater with 2 second places, a third and a fourth place.

  • Tuukka Taponen (Tony Kart Racing Team - Tony Kart - Vortex), the current leader of the championship, also climbs the ranking, reaching fifth position also thanks to the victory in the last heat of the day. The Finn precedes Tymoteusz Kucharczyk (Birel ART Racing - RK - TM Racing) who, starting from the fourth row, recovered in all 14 positions, with a second place as the best result.

  • In seventh place we find Bruno Del Pino (Tony Kart Racing Team - Tony Kart - Vortex) followed by Valerio Rinicella (Parolin Racing Kart - Parolin - TM Racing) and Nikola Tsolov (DPK Racing - KR - IAME), who both lost 3 positions. Actually, Nikola Tsolov scores a victory, but also, like Rinicella, a ninth place.

  • Another protagonist of today's Heat closes the top-10, the Russian Alexander Gubenko (Kosmic Kart Racing Department - Kosmic - Vortex), who also manages to get a second place (and a fastest lap), even if starting from the fifth row in all the heats.

  • Gubenko's teammate, Ean Eyckmans (Kosmic Kart Racing Department - Kosmic - Vortex) follows in 11th position ahead of Nacho Garcia Tuñon (DPK Racing - KR -IAME) and Karol Pasiewicz (Tony Kart Racing Team - Tony Kart - Vortex ), with 8 positions recovered.

  • It was a positive day also for: Cristian Bertuca (Birel ART Racing - Birel ART - TM Racing) 14th and nine positions higher than yesterday; Dion Gowda (Ricky Flynn Motorsport - Kosmic kart - Vortex); 16th but with 26 positions gained; Emmo Fittipaldi (KR Motorsport - KR - IAME) 21st (+16 compared to yesterday) and Alfio Spina (Tony Kart Racing Team - Tony Kart - Vortex) who today earns 24 places in the ranking after yesterday's difficult qualifying.

  • Bad day instead for William Macintyre (Leclerc By Lennox Racing - Birel ART - TM Racing) who lost 20 positions after the third place obtained yesterday, and Giovanni Trentin (Parolin Racing Kart - Parolin - TM Racing) who, albeit with a win in his pocket , goes down to 40th position from 4th.
