WELCOME TO THE "ANTI-LAUNCH" DEVICE.

BUT THERE ARE OTHERS PRIORITIES TO ADDRESS WHEN IT COMES TO KARTING SAFETY

After over a year of development, the new system designed to limit rollovers caused by the front wheel of one kart catching the rear wheel of another debuted at the 2025 FIA Karting World Cup OK-N (held at the Cremona Circuit, an Italian kart track about 130 km from Milan). The Federation calls it "an innovative device to increase safety," but initial reactions—on social media and in the paddock—have been less than favorable and, indeed, have highlighted that the priorities when it comes to increasing safety levels in karting lie elsewhere. Representatives from some manufacturers, in particular, while positively evaluating the objective, offered some very interesting insights. Let's find out what they are

TKART had anticipated it (here is the cited article: "Exclusive: here is the new rear protection for karts required by the FIA") and confirmation has promptly arrived: the FIA has developed and decided to introduce a new "anti-launch" rear bumper. The first test of this device, to verify its effective functioning during a race, took place during the final round of the FIA Karting Academy Trophy-Junior, in Cremona (Italy) last September. And the results have encouraged the Federation to introduce it as early as March 2026. However, the reaction from participants to this innovation has been anything but enthusiastic. As soon as the news was published, a wave of criticism was unleashed in the comments section of our Facebook and Instagram accounts within hours, even before the device actually made its debut on the track. Some expressed concern that the introduction of these devices would result in yet another increase in karting costs; others called the solution superfluous, believing that karts already have far too many fairings. Furthermore, some noted that adding additional protection risks making Racing karts increasingly resemble Rental models. It must be said that, nowadays, criticism on social media is often the most immediate and widespread reaction, as well as gratuitous, even in the face of laudable initiatives like the FIA's aim to improve safety in karting. But, as we know, human beings tend to be reluctant to embrace innovation (there are even specific theories on the subject: search for "Status Quo Bias" or "Innovation Resistance Theory" on your favorite search engine). However, it's also true that perhaps we shouldn't fall into the opposite danger, that of being forced to change things. And, above all, quickly.

The rear bumper with the "anti-launch" system installed on the karts of the FIA Karting Academy Trophy Junior drivers in Cremona (Italy), during the third round of the championship. As explained by Marco Petrilli (FIA Deputy Safety Director & Head of Research and Vehicle Safety) in a video released by the Federation: "The “anti-launch” system is mainly composed of two parts: [A] the rear central protection and [B] the two wheel covers. These were designed to offer better protection of the wheels and reduce the risk of direct contact between the wheels of different karts. Combined with the introduction of the new rear bumper, the technical evolution has been significant. The side protections have also been repositioned, now installed in a more external position, so as to further increase the level of safety also in the front section of the kart."
