While browsing through online stores specializing in the marketing of karting accessories and tools, it is common to come across tools specifically designed – and advertised – to enable very quickly, various kart setup operations (even the seemingly simplest ones that are usually done by hand). Amongst these, one category that caught our attention is that of tools that have the specific function of facilitating the insertion of spacers on the stub axle when adjusting the front track width (for more information, see “Doctor TKART | Adjusting the track width”). In fact, this is precisely one of those procedures that are usually done manually, both by professional mechanics and amateurs. In order to understand how these tools work (since there are no specific instructions in the stores where they are available), evaluating their actual abilities and understanding which type of kart driver (expert, practitioner or beginner) they can be used as an advantage, we tested one of these spacer inserters – specifically one manufactured by Wildkart – on the track. We submitted for evaluation to Michele Zampieri, a highly experienced mechanic and co-owner of CKR, an Italian company that manufactures chassis for Racing karts and has a racing department that participates in national and international single-brand competitions (such as the ROK Cup Challenge) and are periodically involved in international multi-brand events (such as CIK-FIA and WSK competitions). What was Zampieri’s assessment? Are these really useful tools? Additionally, are they worth the purchase price of around 30 euros? Here is what we have found out…
