The FIA Karting World Cup is the most important event of the season for the KZ2 category, structured in a single race weekend together with the FIA Karting World Championship, the latter reserved for the KZ category. Given the nature of its format, it is crucial for drivers, teams and mechanics not to make mistakes and to be ready for every eventuality, the evolving sporting situation and the weather situation, which affects track conditions. Just as happened over the weekend of Oct. 10-13, 2024 at the Kartódromo Internacional do Algarve in Portimão, Portugal, where rain greatly affected the results on Friday and Saturday, giving way to a sunny day during Sunday's final, which was held with temperatures above 20°C. The Portuguese circuit is characterized by a long fast section, starting at the last corner and ending at the first decisive braking point of the first sector, and a subsequent mixed section, consisting of straights and several hairpins. Its particular configuration does not facilitate overtaking maneuvers, especially in the shifter classes. Therefore, qualifying plays a key role on the final outcome. It must also be said, however, that the changing weather conditions have rewarded drivers, teams and technical equipment with the greatest ability to adapt best to often opposite track situations. Just as the winner Cristian Bertuca, driver of Birel ART Racing, was able to do, in pole position in Friday's timed practice run on a completely wet asphalt and first at the finish line of Sunday afternoon's final run, instead, in absolute dry conditions. The Italian, at the wheel of the Birel Art RY30-16 SH chassis (for more read “Under Review | RY30-S16 SH: the 2024 upgrade of the "all 30" Shifter chassis by Birel ART”), was consistently among the fastest drivers in the category as well as an excellent interpreter of both slick (Dunlop DH H) and wet (Dunlop KT14 W15) tires. Thanks to the support of Riccardo Longhi, Team Manager of Birel ART Racing, we had access to information regarding the accessories used by Bertuca during the weekend.

Hubs and rims

In all the competitions in which it participates throughout the season, Birel ART Racing adopts a single and important philosophy: to exclusively use products under the FreeLine brand, the Birel ART brand/department that specializes in the production of kart accessories. This choice is aimed at demonstrating the quality of all products “homemade” by the Italian manufacturer and supplied as standard with the purchase of all Birel ART chassis as well as the certainty that the optimal mix of components to achieve the best performance is precisely that achievable by using only products by Birel ART. In this sense, on the occasion of the final, 85 mm S6 hubs on the front, in aluminum, and the 100 mm “100 R” on the rear, also in aluminum, were used. As for the rims, on the other hand, the choice fell on the DF magnesium model, 130 mm at the front and 210 mm at the rear (in rainy conditions, on the other hand, the 130-180 mm aluminum DHs were used).
