Kart Intake Silencers: Between Paddock Myths and Technical Reality - Part 2 of 3

In the second episode of "True or False" dedicated to the intake silencer (read part 1 of 3), we explore the most interesting, yet little-known, technical aspects of this fundamental kart component. Our guide, once again, is one of the leading experts on the subject: Davide Gaggianesi of the KG S.a.s. Research and Development Team. The Italian technician gave his verdict on six controversial issues:

  • Two silencers with identical shapes, but made of different materials, can have a different impact on engine response.
  • The internal shape of the silencer can influence engine response at mid-range speeds more than peak power.
  • The intake silencer acts as a filter, but also—and above all—as a resonance chamber, improving airflow to the engine and therefore its performance.
  • The larger the silencer's volume, the greater its performance.
  • The airbox is chosen primarily based on the track you will be racing on.
  • Identical airboxes can have different performance levels.
