The intake silencer is one of the components that kart drivers encounter on a daily basis, yes its characteristics and features are often overlooked. Found in all 2-stroke engines in the major categories, it performs a dual function that may seem trivial: reducing noice and filtering debris from the air drawn into the engine. In reality, this component also has a direct impact on the airflow entering the engine and, consequently, on the engine’s performance itself. It is precisely the apparent simplicity of its operation that has, over the time, given rise to various paddock myths surrounding the airbox. Therefore, to fully understand its secrets and rigorously analyze every aspect, we sought the help of a leading expert, Davide Gagianesi, whose role as specialist technician for the development of competition airboxes al KG S.a.s. is a guarantee of authority. We posed about twenty questions to him in a mini-series of three articles on the topic. In this first installment, we explore the complexities of the FIA Karting regulations: we’ll discover the limits that the internal volume of a silencer must respect, the minimum requirements for the filter element, and much more. Keep reading our special feature and become an airbox expert yourself.
