Unlike road cars and most racing cars, karts have no suspension or differential. The absence of these elements makes the axle, i.e. the steel tube that joins the two rear wheels, become essential in determining the dynamic behaviour of the kart (read "Technique | The axle" for further information). So much so that it is one of the components on which technicians and drivers constantly intervene to improve driveability and performance, in an attempt to better adapt to the different track conditions. This is precisely why there are countless doubts discussed in the paddocks regarding axles.
