Brake discs are an essential part of the kart braking system because they transform the friction generated by the pads against the faces of the disc itself into braking torque. They can be made in different shapes and different materials, each of which carries its own advantages and disadvantages (for more, read "Technique | Kart braking system: the different technical and construction philosophies compared"). However, there are many urban legends circulating in the paddocks. To confirm or disprove them, we turned to a leading international brake disc expert, Luis Carlos Maurel, global motorsport director of PFC Brakes - the official IndyCar supplier - and formerly head of the Karting and Moto GP racing department of Galfer, a leading Spanish manufacturer of brake systems. Luis Carlos Maurel answered 12 questions, here are the first 6!
