8 TRUTHS (OR FALSE MYTHS!) ABOUT THE KART MUFFLER
In 2T Racing engines, the muffler plays a fundamental role in the correct functioning of the engine and in consistently guaranteeing the best performance. Since there are no valves to open and close the transfer and exhaust ports (the piston itself acts as a valve during its ascent and descent), the main function of the muffler is to retain and then release the charge (the air-fuel mixture) inside the cylinder at the most correct times based on the engine rpm, acting as a real "orchestra conductor", which regulates harmonics and frequencies, optimizing the phases in which the transfer and exhaust ports are simultaneously open. It is therefore an extremely delicate component, even if at first glance it might seem like a banal or simple object. Professionals know the importance of the muffler well, while amateur kart drivers sometimes tend to underestimate its role, falling into false myths regarding its management, its technical-functional characteristics and regulatory aspects. To test you, we interviewed Eligio Torregiani, a true authority in the field of karting mufflers and owner of Elto Racing, an international reference company in the production and supply of this component. Thanks to this “True or False”, you will have the opportunity to compare your knowledge with the most authoritative opinion on the subject.
