Intake silencer for karts, between paddock myths and technical facts – Part 3 of 3

We have already debunked some myths surrounding the FIA Karting regulations governing intake silencer standards (discover more in Part 1 of 3). We also clarified several practical and technical aspects concerning these components (read Part 2 of 3 here). In this final episode of our “True or False”, once again guided by the experience of Davide Gaggianesi from the KG S.a.s. Research and Development Team, we discover all the tricks for proper airbox maintenance and cleaning according to the “rules” of modern karting. A total of 6 topics are covered:

  • To clean the filter element of an airbox without risking damage, the safest method is to use a high-pressure jet of compressed air
  • Washing the filter with petrol or aggressive solvents is a mistake because they alter the structure of the filter material
  • Lubricating the inner walls of the airbox housing helps retain dirt and reduces the risk of it reaching the carburettor
  • If the filter is refitted before it is completely dry, the carburation may become richer and the engine could suffer damage
  • If you run off track, simply cleaning the airbox filter element is enough before heading back out
  • The airbox filter element must be cleaned in order to ensure maximum efficiency
